Understanding emotions, building resilience and creating connections that matter.
At Panania Child Care Centre and Panania Preschool-Kindergarten, we recognise that the preschool years are an incredible time of growth, discovery and developing independence. Between the ages of three and five, children are learning to navigate friendships, express their needs, manage disappointment and make sense of the world around them.
And sometimes, those little people experience some very BIG feelings!
As educators and parents, we know that supporting children's emotional development isn't always easy. There are moments of frustration, tears, determination and those familiar words, "I can do it myself!"
But behind these behaviours are important developmental milestones. Children are learning who they are, how to communicate their feelings and how to navigate an increasingly complex social world.
Understanding What's Behind the Behaviour
Children don't arrive in the world knowing how to regulate their emotions, manage frustration or respond calmly when things don't go their way. These are skills that develop gradually through nurturing relationships, consistent guidance and meaningful everyday experiences.
What we sometimes interpret as challenging behaviour may actually be a child seeking independence, connection, reassurance or a sense of control.
By looking beyond the behaviour and understanding the developmental needs behind it, we can respond with greater empathy, patience and intention.
Connection and Boundaries Go Hand in Hand
Supporting children's emotional wellbeing doesn't mean removing every challenge or always saying yes.
Children thrive when they experience both warm, responsive relationships and clear, consistent boundaries.
When adults acknowledge children's feelings while maintaining calm and predictable expectations, we help children feel safe, understood and supported.
It's about recognising that all feelings are welcome, but not all behaviours are safe or appropriate.
Through these everyday interactions, children gradually develop emotional awareness, resilience, confidence and the ability to navigate challenges.

Working Together to Support Emotional Wellbeing
We believe that children's social and emotional development is strengthened when educators and families work together, sharing a consistent understanding of children's needs and approaches to supporting them.
Our role is not simply to guide children's behaviour, but to nurture their growing capacity to recognise emotions, develop empathy, build positive relationships and feel confident in themselves.
When children are surrounded by adults who listen, understand and respond with warmth and consistency, we provide the foundations for lifelong emotional wellbeing.
And importantly, we recognise that parents and educators are learning too. There is no expectation to get every response right. What matters is our willingness to reflect, reconnect and continue growing alongside our children.
Explore Our Big Feelings Family Guide
We invite all our families to take some time to explore this wonderful resource. Whether you're navigating morning routines, supporting friendships, responding to big emotions or simply looking for new ways to connect with your child, there is something here for everyone.
Because raising emotionally confident children isn't about preventing big feelings. It's about helping children understand them, work through them and know they are supported every step of the way.
